Skin Type definitions and tips

  • Normal skin is characterised by no or few imperfections, no severe sensitivity no visible pores and a radiant complexion.
  • Combination skin can be dry or normal in some areas and oily and others such as the T-zone (nose, forehead and chin). Many people have combination skin which may benefit from slightly different types of skincare usage in different areas.

    Combination skin can produce large pores, blackheads and shiny skin.
  • Dry skin has almost invisible pores and a dull rough complexion with visible lines. When exposed to drying factors skin can crack and become itchy, irritated or inflamed. In extreme cases it can become rough and scaly especially on the back of your hands arms and legs. Dry skin can be brought about by ageing or hormonal changes, weather, extreme indoor heating, long hot baths and showers and harsh soaps cosmetics or cleansers.

    To combat dry skin take shorter baths and showers (no more than once daily) and use gentle soaps and cleansers (avoid deodorant soaps). Also apply a rich moisturiser right after bathing and reapplies necessary. Use a humidifier and don’t let indoor temperatures get too hot. Wear gloves when using cleaning agents or household detergents.
  • Oily skin types can produce enlarged pores, dull or shiny skin with a thick complexion. Blackheads, pimples and other blemishes also feature. The oiliness of a skin can change depending upon the time of year or the weather. Already skin can be made worse by puberty or hormonal imbalances, stress or exposure to heat or too much humidity.

    To combat oily skin wash your skin no more than twice a day and after you perspire heavily and use a gentle cleanser – don’t scrub. Do not pick or squeeze pimples as this prolongs healing time.
  • Sensitive skins occur for a variety of reasons but is usually in response to particular skincare products. Sensitive skin is characterised by redness, itching, burning, and dryness.

    To combat sensitive skin, try isolating some products that you may be using.
